A lot of gamers out there probably own an Xbox 360 or a PlayStation 3 gaming console. These handheld devices are around for quite some time now and maybe they need newer versions to cater the needs and wants of gamers around the world. Though these video game consoles are among the best that were developed by Microsoft and Sony, many people think that it is time that they develop new handheld consoles as they are getting bored with them.

The lengthy lifecycle of the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 is a big mistake ever made by the two companies according to Julien Merceron, global technology director of Square Enix. This is due to the fact that many strong rivals that also develop handheld gaming devices have emerged because of the reluctance of Sony and Microsoft. The extended console generation from them has indeed taken its toll to these two industry giants. Merceron commented that the decision of the platform holders to prolong the release of new handheld consoles has helped in facilitating the development of new and strong rival platforms. The reluctance of these two industry giants has now taken them into frenzy of developing new platforms that are rivaled by the newer but cheaper hardware.

Merceron stated that this generation of handheld gaming devices from Microsoft and Sony which have lasted for almost 10 years without introducing newer ones is their biggest mistake. You will notice this longevity of this generation’s consoles because there are lots of handheld console developers that have developed new platforms. Most of these new developers won’t succeed so lots of them will wait again for the newer ones and then will jump on that. However, you couldn’t do just that when it comes to this generation of gaming consoles, so these new developers look for some greener pasture in order to see new opportunities.

They found the iOS, web browsers and other things which many of them would not return to the handheld hardware platforms, predicted Merceron. A lot of these new developers should probably extend their thanks to Sony and Microsoft by providing them the time to develop their new platforms. Their emergence is getting stronger by the minute before the new generation of handheld gaming hardware from the two industry giants comes out.

There are those documents that are supposedly leaked suggested that the Xbox 720 is going to be released by Microsoft by 2013’s end, which is eight long years after the Xbox 360 was released in the market. The PlayStation 3 was released in 2006. Evidence showed that the development of the PS4 has been underway since August 2012. Sony told that it will be undesirable for them if they let Microsoft to have an important head start by letting them release its Xbox 720 ahead of the PS4. The company imparts that quality is the most important concern for them than getting their hardware to the market first. Sony added that they’re not prepared yet to reveal their new gaming console until it demonstrates an important leap to the current gaming experience.
